« Le 31 Octobre 1991 est un jour que nous n’oublierons malheureusement jamais. Qui aurait pu imaginer que River nous quitterait si vite ? Bien que j’aie le sentiment que cela est une mort prématurée, la réalité n’en est pas moins cruelle. Il adoptait un régime végétarien et était soucieux de l’environnement. Cependant, l’alcool, le tabac et la drogue faisaient partie de son existence comme s’il n’y avait pas de contradiction. Il était en quelque sorte un être humain complexe. Bien sûr, cela ne lui retire en rien sa radiance. Dans tous ses rôles de jeune garçon, comme dans « Stand By Me », « Mosquito Coast », ou encore « A bout de course », il savait qu’il devrait grandir. Non seulement il était un étrange garçon, comme Peter Pan, il disait « je veux rester un enfant pour toujours », mais cela se lisait également dans son regard, franc, porté droit devant lui, qu’il savait qu’il perdrait quelque chose en devenant adulte. Il était conscient qu’il devait devenir indépendant. Je pense que cela est l’objectif de la « beauté de la jeunesse », en un sens. Il n’avait plus la perception de sa propre réalité. Mais pour moi, il vivra toujours dans mon cœur, et dans le cœur de tous ceux qu’il a aidé, et aimé. »

Translation of the author's message after the death of River Phoenix for a magazine published in 1993.
"31th October 1991 is a day we will unfortunately never forget. Who could imagine that River would leave us so soon ? Although I have the feeling that this is a premature death, the reality isn't less cruel. He was on vegetarian diet and was also very concerned about environment. However, alcohol, tobacco, and drugs were a part of his everyday life like if there wasn't any contradiction. He was, in a way, a complicated human being. Of course, all of this don't take away his radiance. In all of his young boy parts, like "Stand By Me", "Mosquito Coast", or "Running on Empty", he knew he had to grow up. Not only he was a very strange boy, like Peter Pan, he used to say "I want to stay a child forever", but we could see in his straightforward look, always straight ahead, that he knew he would lose something becoming an adult. He was aware he had to become independent. I think this is the goal of the "beauty of the youth", in a way. He didn't have any perception of his own reality. But for me, he will always live on in my heart, and in the hearts of all of those he helped, and loved.
